Service Line Guidelines

Fort Hill Natural Gas is excited to help you choose the most economical source of energy for your business. Please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail or call any of our Fort Hill Natural Gas offices with any questions or concerns. We look forward to assisting you.

Excess Footage

If the route we must take to construct your service line from the gas main on the street to the point where the meter will be located at your structure exceeds 175 feet, we will bill you for the excess footage at the rate of $6.00 per foot. This will be payable prior to the installation of your gas line. We will make every effort to see that the service line is constructed along the shortest route possible unless above ground or below ground obstacles prevent us from doing so.

Meter Location

Contact our Engineering department immediately if the meter site we have selected and marked with a yellow flag is not suitable to you. We will try to accommodate your request for another meter location if it is possible. If you request a change of meter location after we have completed construction of your service line, the expense of moving the meter to another site will become the property owner's responsibility. You will need to come into the office to make application for the move meter. The charge for the move meter is $50.00 and $6.00 per foot for any gas pipe that is used.

Private Utilities

Private utilities are owned and maintained by you, the property owner. These include your septic tank and drain lines, your water lines from the meter to the house, sprinkler systems, satellite TV cables, any underground power from your house to outside lights or building, and any other type of "privately" owned utilities. Fort Hill or its contractor will contact the local water, sewer, telephone, cable TV and electric company to "locate" their facilities on your property. It will be the responsibility of the property owner to accurately locate any private utilities on your property. If our crew damages private utilities that were either not located or incorrectly located by the property owner, it WILL NOT be the responsibility of Fort Hill or our contractor to replace or repair these utilities.

Construction Scheduling

Due to the great demand for natural gas service in our area, we sometimes experience delays in construction. Maintaining the lowest rates possible is a primary goal for FHNGA; therefore, we must meet the construction demands with the available crews on staff and on contract. Typically, service line construction delays are 3 to 4 weeks, except during the fall and winter when we may experience longer delays due to inclement weather and a higher demand for service.

If your service requires the extension of a gas main, we cannot enter the main extension into our schedule with other projects until the required criteria has been met. The waiting period for main line construction can be as much as 6 months after we receive the required number of taps. We apologize for any inconvenience, as we try to provide gas service as quickly and economically as possible.

Excess Flow Valve Notification

As required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), you are hereby notified that an excess flow valve (EFV) which meets the minimum DOT performance standards is available for installation on your natural gas service line.

Safety Benefits

An EFV is a safety device that is designed to automatically stop the flow of natural gas when rupture or damage occurs from gas main to your meter set. The EFV is normally installed at (near) the service line's connection to the gas main, and protects against the dangers associated with an uncontrolled escape of natural gas.

It should be noted that these devices generally DO NOT protect against slow leaks such as those caused by corrosion, or loose fittings. This will NOT stop leaks beyond the gas meter (house piping).

Installation of an EFV

If you would like to have an EFV installed simply call FHNGA at 864-859-6375 to request the EFV installation. The Installation would require payment of $350 for materials and labor. This does not include cost(s) associated with paving or landscaping work that may be required. Such costs, if any will be the responsibility of property owner.

Should you have any more questions, please give us a call in Easley at 864-859-6375, Seneca at 864-882-8126 or Williamston at 864-847-7471
