History of Fort Hill
Fort Hill Natural Gas Authority was established by an act of the South Carolina Legislature on March 31, 1952 (Act #799). Our namesake is the former home of statesman John C. Calhoun which is located on the campus of Clemson University in upstate South Carolina.
Fort Hill Natural Gas Authority was established by the South Carolina Legislature to serve the municipalities and outlying areas of Oconee, Pickens and portions of Anderson Counties. By statute, Fort Hill is a non-profit, tax-exempt entity and is authorized to issue tax-exempt "municipal" bonds to construct and expand our natural gas distribution network and facilities. There are four other Natural Gas Authorities in South Carolina, each of which was established by separate legislation. The others are Chester County Natural Gas Authority, Clinton-Newberry Natural Gas Authority, Lancaster County Natural Gas Authority and York County Natural Gas Authority.
When our Enabling Act was written, there were six original member municipalities of the Authority, which included Central, Clemson, Easley, Liberty, Seneca and Williamston. The municipalities of Norris, Pelzer, Pendleton, Pickens, Six Mile, Walhalla, Westminster, West Pelzer and West Union have become members of the Authority since that time. As also specified in the Enabling Act, the governing body of the Authority is a six member Board of Directors. Each Board member is appointed by the Governor of South Carolina to serve a term of six years.
Fort Hill serves approximately 40,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the upstate of South Carolina. We maintain many miles of steel and PE plastic distribution gas mains and service lines of varying diameters between 5/8" and 10".
Fort Hill purchases natural gas for resale to our customers on the open market. The gas is transported from various sources in the gas-producing regions of the United States to Fort Hill via three interconnects with Williams Gas Pipeline in Anderson County, South Carolina.
Under the guidance of our Board of Directors, Fort Hill is a progressive company that continually looks for more efficient and economical ways of serving our customers by using new methods and technology whenever possible. The Board of Directors, management and employees of Fort Hill are dedicated to providing clean and dependable natural gas, quality appliances and service to our customers.
