History of Fort Hill

Fort Hill Natural Gas Authority was established by an act of the South Carolina Legislature on March 31, 1952 (Act #799). Our name was taken from "Fort Hill," the former home of statesman John C. Calhoun which is located on the campus of Clemson University in upstate South Carolina.

Enabling Act

Fort Hill Natural Gas Authority was established by the South Carolina Legislature to serve the municipalities and outlying areas of Oconee, Pickens and portions of Anderson Counties. By statute, Fort Hill is a non-profit, tax-exempt entity and is authorized to issue tax-exempt "municipal" bonds to construct and expand our natural gas distribution network and facilities. There are 4 other Natural Gas Authorities in South Carolina, each of which was established by separate legislation. The others are Chester County Natural Gas Authority, Clinton-Newberry Natural Gas Authority, Lancaster County Natural Gas Authority and York County Natural Gas Authority.

When the Enabling Act was written, there were 6 original member municipalities of the Authority, which were: Central, Clemson, Easley, Liberty, Seneca and Williamston. The municipalities of Norris, Pelzer, Pendleton, Pickens, Six Mile, Walhalla, Westminster, West Pelzer and West Union have become members of the Authority since that time. As also specified in the Enabling Act, the governing body of the Authority is a 6 member Board Of Directors each member of which is appointed by the Governor of South Carolina to serve a term of 6 years.
